Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA)

Logo of Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA)

Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA) is one of the most significant regional newspapers in central Germany, based in Kassel. It covers northern Hesse and parts of southern Lower Saxony, achieving substantial regional reach through both print and digital offerings. The HNA provides a mix of regional and local reporting supplemented by national and international news, culture, sports, and special formats, establishing it as a leading news source in northern Hesse.

The newspaper stands out for its strong local section, comprising dozens of independent regional editions including titles such as Kasseler Allgemeine, Witzenhäuser Allgemeine, and Eschweger Allgemeine. Since Ippen Group's acquisition, HNA has sourced a significant portion of its content from Ippen's central editorial office in Munich. The publisher is Verlag Dierichs GmbH & Co KG, a central company within the Ippen Group. HNA plays a key role within this conglomerate, serving as the editorial center for the Kassel region while maintaining close economic ties to other Ippen publications such as Frankfurter Rundschau and Münchner Merkur.

HNA was founded in 1945 as Hessische Nachrichten. Following acquisitions in the southern Lower Saxony region in the early 1970s, the newspaper assumed its current title in 1974. Its development is closely tied to northern Hesse's post-World War II history, particularly as a platform for local democratic discourse and public opinion formation. It was the third newspaper in Hesse to receive a printing license from the American occupation authorities. Until its sale to Ippen Group in 2002, the newspaper was published by the Dierichs family publishing house—an important German publishing dynasty.

Through numerous acquisitions, HNA has repeatedly been involved in debates regarding media concentration in regional press markets, particularly following Ippen Group's involvement and subsequent acquisition. Political controversies have primarily centered on allegations of excessive editorial influence exerted by Ippen Group on its newspapers, the erosion of editorial independence, newsroom consolidations, and centralization of editorial operations. In 2017, HNA merged with Mittelhessisches Druck- und Verlagshaus, further consolidating media power in the Hesse region.

In 2021, Ippen Group—specifically publisher Dirk Ippen—faced criticism when he withheld investigative reporting by an Ippen Group reporting team documenting misconduct and abuse-of-power allegations against Julian Reichelt, former editor-in-chief of BILD. Ippen justified the decision by asserting that publishers have "the right to set editorial guidelines."
