Märkische Oderzeitung (MOZ) is a regional daily newspaper based in Frankfurt (Oder) serving eastern Brandenburg. The publication covers local, regional, and national news. It reaches a broad audience in the North-East of Germany as a primary source of information in the region. The newspaper emerged as a newly founded successor of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) newspaper “Neuer Tag”. 

 In addition to the daily newspaper, MOZ publishes advertising journals including Märkischer Sonntag and Märker, along with local titles such as Oranienburger Generalanzeiger and Hennigsdorfer Generalanzeiger, serving various communities and audience segments in the region.

MOZ is published by Märkisches Medienhaus GmbH & Co. KG, which is owned by Frankfurter Mediengesellschaft mbH & Co. KG. Frankfurter Mediengesellschaft is wholly owned by Neue Pressegesellschaft (NPG) mbH & Co. KG, based in Ulm, one of Germany's largest regional media groups. This ownership structure consolidates editorial, printing, distribution, and marketing operations under NPG's management.

MOZ operates both print and digital platforms to reach its readership in Brandenburg and surrounding areas. The newspaper maintains editorial offices and printing facilities in Frankfurt (Oder) and manages distribution networks for its print products across the region.

Märkische Oderzeitung is published by Märkisches Medienhaus GmbH & Co. KG, which is owned by Frankfurter Mediengesellschaft mbH & Co. KG. Frankfurter Mediengesellschaft is wholly owned by Neue Pressegesellschaft (NPG) mbH & Co. KG, based in Ulm.
Through this ownership structure, the Ebner family holds an indirect 63.3% stake in Märkische Oderzeitung. The Ebner family's ownership in NPG comprises direct holdings and additional shares held through ZVD Mediengesellschaft mbH. Ruth Aberle holds an indirect 31.4% stake in the newspaper through her shareholding in NPG. The remaining approximately 5.3% is held by other small NPG shareholders.

Märkische Oderzeitung was founded in 1990, replacing Neuer Tag, the newspaper that had served as the official publication of the Frankfurt (Oder) district branch of the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands, Socialist Unity Party of Germany), the ruling communist party of East Germany. Neuer Tag had been established on August 15, 1952.

    Märkische Oderzeitung was established in March 1990 as a transformation of the GDR district newspaper Neuer Tag, the former official publication of the SED district leadership in Frankfurt (Oder). On March 17, 1990—one day before the first free GDR People's Chamber elections—Neuer Tag was reconstituted as the independent daily newspaper Märkische Oderzeitung. The publisher was Märkisches Medienhaus GmbH & Co. KG, and many editors from Neuer Tag were retained in the new publication.

    Marc Nickol is managing director of Märkisches Medienhaus and MOZ (Märkische Oderzeitung). He has been with the company for several years and is responsible for key business areas. Nickol's professional career is characterised by many years of experience in the regional newspaper landscape, particularly in the Brandenburg area.     Thomas Radek is Chairman and Managing Director of Märkisches Medienhaus and Lausitzer Rundschau, making him responsible for managing Brandenburg's largest media group. Before joining the company, he was Managing Director at SWP Hohenlohe and has experience in managing various media companies. Together with Marc Nickol, Radek determines the strategic direction and transformation of the media company in the wake of current mergers and structural reforms. As part of an eight-member management team, he coordinates central corporate activities and management throughout the entire publishing group.

    Claus Liesegang serves as editor-in-chief (Chefredakteur) of Märkische Oderzeitung in Frankfurt (Oder), a position he has held since January 2017. Since August 2024, he has also served as editor-in-chief of Lausitzer Rundschau in Cottbus.
    Previously, he held positions as deputy editor-in-chief of Wiesbadener Kurier and editor-in-chief of Donaukurier in Ingolstadt.

    Oliver Haustein-Teßmer serves as Chief Transformation Officer at Neue Pressegesellschaft since August 2024, responsible for digital transformation initiatives across media brands including Südwest Presse, Märkische Oderzeitung, and Lausitzer Rundschau.

    Haustein-Teßmer previously served as editor-in-chief of Lausitzer Rundschau for over eight years. Earlier in his career, he worked as a trainee and editor at Lausitzer Rundschau, as an editor at Axel Springer SE, and as head of news at Trierischer Volksfreund. He studied history and politics and completed an executive program in news innovation and leadership at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.

    Tilo Schelsky has served as managing director of Neue Pressegesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (NPG) in Ulm as well as Märkisches Medienhaus GmbH & Co. KG and LR Medienverlag (Lausitzer Rundschau) in Brandenburg since September 1, 2020. He is responsible for the northeastern business division. He previously held managing director positions at Mediengruppe Mitteldeutsche Zeitung since 2013 and at DuMont Regionalmedienholding from 2019. His work includes company-wide distribution and logistics operations. Following structural reorganization in Brandenburg, he was appointed sole managing director of Märkisches Medienhaus and LR Medienverlag GmbH from February 2021 onwards and holds overall responsibility for operations at these locations.

  • Andreas Simmet

    Andreas Simmet has served as chairman of the board of management of Neue Pressegesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, based in Ulm, since January 1, 2020. Previously, he took over management of Märkisches Medienhaus in Frankfurt (Oder) in 2012. He has guided NPG's strategic expansion, including through the acquisitions of Schwäbisches Tagblatt and Medienholding Süd, which elevated the company to Germany's third-largest regional media group. In his role, Simmet directs extensive media operations and holds numerous management positions in subsidiary companies, including logistics and delivery services as well as marketing agencies.
