Münchner Merkur

Logo of Münchner Merkur

Münchner Merkur is the highest-circulation subscription newspaper in Bavaria. The newspaper covers the Munich area and addresses national and international topics. The paper is published by Münchner Zeitungs-Verlags GmbH & Co. KG, formed in 2016 from a merger of the editorial offices of Münchner Merkur and tz.

Ippen Digital GmbH & Co. KG, located at the same address as Münchner Zeitungs-Verlag GmbH, is editorially responsible for all online content of the Ippen newspaper group, including the online edition of Münchner Merkur. This means the online edition operates under different editorial management than the print version.

Since coming under Ippen ownership, the newspaper has undergone editorial budget reductions and mergers with other local newspapers, which the Bavarian Journalists' Association has criticized. Original reporting is now concentrated in the regional section, with national news sourced from news agencies.

Münchner Merkur publishes 15 local editions. The Oberbayerische Volksblatt reproduces the main paper's content while maintaining its own local editorial office. Combined paid circulation across all Münchner Merkur editions, including the Oberbayerische Volksblatt, is 249,206 copies.

Facts

Founding Year1946

The Münchner Merkur is the successor to the Münchner Zeitung, which was published from 1892 to 1943 before the Nazi regime shut it down.

Founder
  • August Huck

August Huck, born in 1889, was active in the German publishing and printing business. Before World War I, he owned an impressive conglomerate of print media, including the Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten, Breslauer Neueste Nachrichten, Leipziger Zeitung, Münchner Zeitung, Bayerische Zeitung, Württemberger Zeitung, and Kasseler Neueste Nachrichten. He held a dominant position in the former Münchener Zeitungsverlag KG. This publishing house had published the predecessor of the Münchner Merkur, the Münchener Zeitung. Since Huck and his heir Wolfgang were only formally incriminated as members of the NSDAP, they were no longer considered as publishers by the American occupation administration in 1945. Nevertheless, they still held 57% of the publishing capital; the remaining owners were his three nephews (Joachim, Harald, and Gerhard Huck) and the publishing director Hermann Vitalowitz (1890-1965). The latter had meanwhile founded the Neue Münchner Verlags GmbH, which published the Münchner Mittag and leased buildings and machinery from Huck's Münchener Zeitungsverlag KG. On January 1, 1953, Münchener Zeitungsverlag was formed. Wolfgang Huck contributed his real estate and the printing plant, while Neue Münchner Verlags GmbH contributed the newspaper.

CEO
  • Daniel Schöningh

Daniel Schönigh is Dirk Ippen's nephew and closely involved in his business affairs. He holds a 30% stake in the publishing house F. Wolff & Sohn KG. He is the managing director of F. Wolff & Sohn KG, Münchner Zeitungs-Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, and other companies owned by the Ippen family.

Editor-In-Chief
  • Georg Anastasiadis

Georg Anastasiadis has been editor-in-chief of Merkur.de since 2016. The Munich-born economist began his career at Münchner Merkur and advanced from a simple editor to senior editorial management. In addition to his role as editor-in-chief, he is also a member of the management board of Merkur tz Redaktions GmbH.
