Hubert Burda Media

Hubert Burda Media

In 1903, Franz Burda I laid the foundation stone in Philippsburg for a family business that is now almost 120 years old. Today it bears the name Hubert Burda Media. Just five years after the company was founded, Burda moved the company headquarters to Offenburg. His son, Senator Franz Burda, transformed the originally small three-man print shop into one of the largest printing and publishing houses in the Federal Republic of Germany. Today, the internationally active media group has around 390 media outlets in Germany and more than 110 internationally. As a visionary entrepreneur, Senator Franz Burda made a significant contribution to the German economic miracle. In the 1970s and 1980s, he continued to expand and founded new printing plants in the USA, making Burda the world's largest gravure printer during this period. His wife, Aenne Burda, also pursued ambitious international goals. Even before the fall of the Iron Curtain, "Burda Moden" was the first western magazine to be published in the USSR. The Soviet president's wife at the time, Raissa Gorbacheva, personally campaigned for it and declared: "Burda Moden is my contribution to the democratisation of women in the Soviet Union."

Following the division of the company in 1987, Hubert Burda, the current senior member of the Burda family, took over the management of the group. Since the mid-1990s, he has played a pioneering role in the development of digital business models. For example, he launched Focus magazine and numerous other successful media brands and magazines, including in the digital sector. Today, Hubert Burda Media generates more than half of its turnover in this digital sector. The media group is represented in 14 countries with around 500 media brands and employs around 10,500 people. Germany remains the creative centre of the company, with over 20 locations in the country, the most important of which are in Offenburg, Munich, Hamburg and Berlin.

Burda's history is characterised by the combination of tradition and renewal as well as a down-to-earth and cosmopolitan approach.

General Information

Founding Year

Affiliated Interests Founder

Franz Burda I.

born in Offenburg in 1873 and came from a modest family. His father, a hat walker from Eastern Bohemia, died young, so Franz began an apprenticeship as a printer at the age of 14. After successfully completing his journeyman's examination in 1891, he worked for seven years as a so-called Schweizerdegen, which meant printer and typesetter. At the age of 25, he left Offenburg and found a job in Otto Pröttel's print shop in Philippsburg. When Otto Pröttel died three years later, Franz married his widow Karoline Pröttel and took over the print shop.
In 1903, the Philippsburg newspaper operated under the name ‘Druck und Verlag Franz Burda.’ However, business was not going well and Burda had to file for insolvency in 1907. The following year, 1908, the 24-year-old decided to try his luck again in his home town of Offenburg. In a rear building at Gerberstrasse 16, he set up his first print shop in Offenburg on an area measuring four by eight metres. His start-up capital consisted of two printing presses from Philippsburg: a platen press and a high-speed press from Koenig & Bauer, which he had acquired in 1897.
As a small businessman and father of a large family with nine children, Franz Burda I was constantly confronted with financial difficulties. Nevertheless, he did not allow his zest for life to diminish. Humour and music were the best ways for him to face the challenges of everyday life.
Despite his optimistic attitude, even the always cheerful Franz Burda had to realise that business in Philippsburg was extremely poor. The small town offered little chance of survival for a small print shop. A four-page local newsletter was published twice a week, mainly containing official news. However, there was hardly any demand for other print jobs. What's more, the small town was not even supplied with electricity, so the flywheel of the printing press had to be operated by hand. Franz Burda's mother Josefine and his father took turns feeding the paper and adjusting the printing and inking rollers.
Franz Burda I died in 1926 and the company passed into the hands of his son, Franz Burda II. He formed the Burda publishing house, from which the media group Hubert Burda Media developed in the post-war decades.
