Ippen-Gruppe
IPPEN.MEDIA is the umbrella brand for the entrepreneurial activities of the media group of publisher Dirk Ippen and its partners. These range from the traditional print business to one of the largest news platforms in Germany. IPPEN.MEDIA combines entrepreneurial competence and online expertise with the experience of a traditional publishing house. More than 20 daily newspapers, several radio stations and numerous advertising papers belong to the group.
Through F. Wolff & Sohn KG, the majority of the shareholdings are directly or indirectly held, controlled or influenced in one way or another. The Ippen family is the majority shareholder of the KG, but also of other media publishing houses, in some cases as the sole shareholder.

Affiliated Interests Founder
(1899-1968) was born on the Carolinenhof farm in Osteel, the son of the East Frisian farmer and community leader Andreas Ippen and his wife Elvire Rulffes. He studied at the University of Frankfurt and received his doctorate in economics and social sciences in 1923. He then began his professional career as managing director of a newspaper in Bochum and a brewery. From 1923 to 1933, he was managing director of the Niederrheinisch-Westfälischer Zeitungsverleger-Verein.
From 1933, Rolf Ippen was managing director of Theodor Reismann-Grone GmbH in Essen and managed the publishing house of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Zeitung from 1933 to 1943. In 1940, he took over the position of director at Preussag Rüdersdorf, where the proportion of forced labourers rose to 50% of the workforce under his leadership, including 2000 deportees from 16 nations. During this time, the production of synthetic bauxite for the manufacture of aluminium, essential for German fighter aircraft production, was a central element of his work.
After the Second World War, Rolf Ippen laid the foundations for the Westphalian publishing group. From 1949, he acted as managing director and minority shareholder of the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ), which today belongs to the Funke Media Group. He also managed Düsseldorfer Welt am Sonnabend GmbH, Langenberg Kupfer- und Messingwerke GmbH and DuMont Presse GmbH. He was a shareholder of WAZ until 1963. After a dispute among the shareholders, he had himself paid off and temporarily invested in the stocking manufacturer Schulte & Dieckhoff before joining the publishing house Emil Griebsch Graphische Betriebe in 1966.
When Rolf Ippen died, he left his son Dirk a share in the ‘Westfälischer Anzeiger’, which Dirk Ippen later used to build up a significant media empire that is now one of the five largest in Germany.

Executive Board
(*1940) is the son of Rolf Ippen, a former minority shareholder of Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ), which is now wholly owned by Funke Mediengruppe. Dirk Ippen grew up in Essen and studied law in Freiburg, Hamburg and Münster, where he also gained his doctorate. His father had given him a share in the Westfälischer Anzeiger in Hamm shortly before his death at the end of the 1960s. As junior publisher and editor-in-chief, the 28-year-old Dirk Ippen managed to restructure the publishing house and anchor the paper more firmly in the region. From the publishing house of the Westfälischer Anzeiger, Ippen had created a Germany-wide network of regional and local papers over decades through skilful acquisitions of district papers, newspapers that cover a district - mostly in cooperation and not as sole publisher. In 2000, he established the non-profit Ippen Foundation for cultural and social causes in the places where his newspapers are published. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Roland Berger Foundation.
is Managing Director of Ippen Digital Media GmbH. He holds 8% of the shares in the publishing house F. Wolff & Sohn KG and is considered the digital strategist of the Ippen Group. Ippen trained as a banker and studied industrial engineering in Munich. In 2005, Ippen joined the Markt Group as Head of IT, which at the time was still jointly owned by Funke Mediengruppe, Rheinische Post and the Ippen Group. In 2006, he founded Ippen Digital as a service provider and developer for Internet platforms within the newspaper group and as the operator of the Ippen Zentralredaktion. In 2011, he added the content agency Ippen Digital Media, which also addresses external clients.
is the nephew of Dirk Ippen. He holds 30% of the shares in the publishing house F. Wolff & Sohn KG. He is Managing Director of F. Wolff & Sohn KG, Münchener Zeitungs-Verlag GmbH & Co. KG and other holdings of the Ippen family.
Non-Executive Board
is Managing Director of Ippen Digital Media GmbH. In addition to Ippen Digital, Marx also manages Munich Online GmbH (MOL) and thus the online business of the Ippen publishing house for Munich and Upper Bavaria.
is CTO of Ippen Digital Media GmbH and a member of the management board.
Further Information
Meta Data
Since the Ippen Group (Ippen.Media) is to be understood more as an umbrella brand than as a group or individual company, no financial information can be provided for the group. The same applies to the number of employees, the tax number and other information. The structure of the Ippen holdings is very complex; some companies in turn have partial holdings in other companies, which in turn have partial holdings in third and fourth companies and among themselves. For this reason, it is also not easy to say which TV stations, radio stations, internet services, newspapers and magazines the Ippen Group holds more than 25 per cent of the shares in. This profile therefore lists all the companies in which Ippen has a direct or indirect interest and over which it may have influence. On request, shareholder Jan Ippen did not provide any further information or data on the Ippen Group and did not answer the questions asked, including those on shareholdings and financial data.
