The DuMont family

The DuMont (also: Neven-DuMont) family is a German publishing family from Cologne. The DuMont Media Group, which is owned by the family, is one of the oldest media companies in Germany. Several family members currently hold positions in the DuMont Media Group, including Isabella Neven DuMont (chairwoman of the supervisory board), Christian DuMont Schütte (deputy chairman of the supervisory board) and Hannibal DuMont Schütte (member of the supervisory board).

The roots of the DuMont Group go back to the 17th century, and the publishing house M. DuMont Schauberger, from which the present-day DuMont Media Group emerged, was founded in 1818. Today, the media group includes several daily newspapers, a book publishing company and various digital companies. Between 2019 and 2020, DuMont first sold the Berlin publishing house and later also the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung and the Hamburger Morgenpost. The local newspapers Kölner Stadtanzeiger, Kölnische Rundschau and Express, on the other hand, remained part of the media group. DuMont hit the headlines in October 2023 when the company closed its printing plant in Cologne and dismissed its employees without prior notice or involvement of the works council. In February 2024, the trade union ver.di filed a complaint against the managing directors of DuMont Druck Köln Verwaltungs- und Beteiligungs GmbH.

In the context of the MOM, the term ‘DuMont family’ refers to all members of the DuMont, DuMont-Schütte and Neven Dumont families who hold shares in DuMont Mediengruppe GmbH & Co. KG. The largest shareholders are Isabella DuMont (29.58%), Christian DuMont Schütte (19.5%), Cornelia Vischer (née DuMont, 16.5%) and Hedwig Neven DuMont (9%). The other family members each hold a maximum of five per cent of the company.
