Nordwest-Medien Gruppe

Nordwest-Medien Gruppe is a regional media company in northwest Lower Saxony publishing Nordwest-Zeitung, Emder Zeitung, Nordwest Sonntagsblätter, and other local titles including OM Wochenblatt, Anzeiger für Harlingerland, and Friesländer Boten. The group reaches over 70% of readers in its core market and approximately 50% across its entire distribution area.
The group employs approximately 776 employees and generated revenue of €116.2 million in 2024. Nordwest-Zeitung, published by Nordwest-Zeitung Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG and the group's flagship publication, generated €41.2 million in revenue. The group operates as an operating company rather than a holding structure; ultimate control rests with the Köser and von Bothmer families.
Beyond print, Nordwest-Medien Gruppe holds stakes in several radio stations through its subsidiary NWZ Funk und Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG, including Radio ffn, Antenne Niedersachsen, and stations in Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, Hamburg, and other locations.
Key decision-makers include the shareholder families, current management including Stephanie von Unruh, Harold Grönke, and Thorben Meiners, and editorial leadership such as Ulrich Schönborn.
The group was subject to antitrust proceedings. Between 2006 and 2007, Nordwest-Mediengruppe was required to divest stakes in the Ostfriesland newspaper group after the Federal Cartel Office objected to acquisitions made through trustees and shell companies without notification. In 2008, the Federal Cartel Office imposed fines of €2.5 million against the group and €200,000 against a member of the Köser family. The Weser-Ems Press Foundation became involved in discussions regarding shareholding transparency during these proceedings. Hunte Report was sold to the foundation during divestment but was repurchased by the NWZ Group in 2010.
Since December 2024, Nordwest-Medien Gruppe markets advertising jointly with NOZ/mh:n MEDIEN through the newly established Werbevermarktung Nordwest GmbH & Co. KG. The group also cooperates editorially with Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on political reporting from Hanover and joint state correspondents and podcast formats.
In September 2025, it was announced that Nordwest-Mediengruppe's publishing, printing, digital, and logistics operations would be sold to Madsack Group, effective January 2026. Following the transaction, Sylvia Madsack (19.1% of Madsack) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (23.1% of Madsack) will become proportional owners of Nordwest-Mediengruppe. The sale remains subject to Federal Cartel Office approval. The group's radio and broadcasting operations are to remain separate from the transaction.
