Radio Bremen

Logo of Radio Bremen

Radio Bremen is the public broadcaster serving Germany's smallest federal state. As an ARD member, it is a major source of information and culture for Bremen and its surrounding region, offering a comprehensive range of radio and television programming. Radio Bremen operates several radio stations, including Bremen Zwei (classical music, culture, and current affairs), Bremen Vier (pop and entertainment), and Bremen Next (youth and pop culture), as well as Radio Bremen TV, which broadcasts regional news, documentaries, and cultural programmes.

The station reaches a broad audience daily across Bremen and its hinterland, with radio programming reaching hundreds of thousands of listeners. Radio Bremen is distinguished by its strong local presence and comprehensive coverage of Bremen's politics, economy, and society, complemented by reporting on national and international issues as part of ARD.

Since 2019, Radio Bremen has been led by Intendant Yvette Gerner. As a public broadcaster, Radio Bremen is controlled by the Broadcasting Council, a body comprising political, societal, and cultural representatives from the state of Bremen. As a public service broadcaster, Radio Bremen is primarily financed through broadcasting fees and operates on a non-profit basis, ensuring independence from commercial interests.

The station has a long history: the current public broadcasting corporation emerged from the US military radio station Radio Bremen, which was established in 1945 and became the civilian public broadcaster in 1949. In 1950, Radio Bremen was a founding member of the ARD and played a significant role in building the association. The station developed early programming focused on regional identity and culture. Radio Bremen works closely with other ARD corporations, particularly NDR and WDR, in news production and joint programmes and broadcasts. The station is also active in digital formats and podcasts to reach younger audiences.

As the only public broadcaster in the state, Radio Bremen plays a central role in shaping public opinion and promoting culture and education in the region.
