Rheinische Post Mediengruppe

Logo of Rheinische Post Mediengruppe

Rheinische Post Mediengruppe (Düsseldorf), one of the five largest newspaper publishers in Germany by circulation, publishes Rheinische Post (100%). Founded in 1946 as the "leading medium for the Rhineland," it is today the second-largest regional daily newspaper in the Federal Republic after WAZ, with a paid circulation of 254,991 copies and total distribution of 260,749 (first quarter 2025).

The media group also publishes Bonner General-Anzeiger (100%) in North Rhine-Westphalia with a daily circulation of 47,550 copies and has been the majority owner of Saarbrücker Zeitung Medienhaus GmbH (56%) since 2021, which in turn publishes Saarbrücker Zeitung, Trierischer Volksfreund, and Pfälzischer Merkur.

In 2024, the Press Council (Voluntary Self-Regulation of German Print and Online Media) issued a reprimand when Rheinische Post (like several other newspapers) described the climate action group "Last Generation" as a criminal organization, although a court had only established initial suspicion. The Press Council stated that this was incompatible with journalistic due diligence.

More than 20 years ago, there was a "reader uprising" (Der Spiegel, February 26, 2003). This concerned an "unmistakably one-sided bias" that more than 100 readers, largely theologians, accused Rheinische Post of in its reporting on the Iraq War.

Founding Year1946

The media group traces its origins to the publisher of Rheinische Post (RP), founded in 1946.
Rheinische Post was founded by Anton Betz, Karl Arnold, and Erich Wenderoth. They received a license from the British military government following the Second World War to establish a new, free, and democratic newspaper.

Founder
  • Dr Karl Hans Arnold

Karl Arnold was one of the founders of the CDU, served as Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf at the time, and later became the first freely elected Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1947 to 1956. He stood for a Christian, trade union-oriented, and democratic new beginning.

  • Anton Betz

Anton Betz was a German journalist, publisher, and publicist who served as the principal license holder and a defining integrative figure for the newspaper. He was also politically engaged and was among the founders of the CDU in the Rhineland.

  • Erich Wenderoth

Erich Wenderoth was a lawyer who engaged on behalf of persecuted individuals during the Hitler regime. His motivation for founding Rheinische Post was to "create a new free newspaper that accompanies, promotes, and strengthens democratic reconstruction." He was a jurist, committed Protestant Christian, and lawyer whose motivation for co-founding the newspaper was to establish an economically independent and free press.
