Christian Güssow is one of two principal owners of Bremer Tageszeitungen AG, holding 50% of company shares through family structures. He is also a member of the company's supervisory board. Güssow and the Hackmack family jointly control the company through Hackmack, Meyer KG, the parent holding company.
Güssow's role as co-owner of Bremer Tageszeitungen AG was marked by internal conflicts that intensified during the tenure of his co-shareholder Ulrich Hackmack as board chair. Under Hackmack's leadership, tensions arose with the editorial staff, including through the management style of an editor-in-chief he appointed, and labor disputes occurred that were sharply criticized by the German Journalists Association (DJV). As a 50% shareholder in BTAG through Hackmack, Meyer KG, Güssow was a central actor: the workforce resisted the outsourcing of editorial positions to subcontractors, some of which were 100% subsidiaries of the holding company and paid significantly below union rates.
At Güssow's initiative, he filed legal proceedings in 2011 that were confirmed by the Bremen Court of Appeal and later by the Federal Court of Justice, declaring Hackmack's contract extension void. Through this legal action, Güssow successfully removed his co-owner from operational management—a step that culminated in Hackmack's dismissal in 2013 and marked the peak of a long-standing power struggle between the two owner families.
